How to Spot Ad Click Fraud

How to Spot Ad Click Fraud

Click fraud shows up in analytics before the ad account

Ad platforms optimize CTR and CPC. Click fraud (competitors, bot farms, junk networks) inflates clicks without purchase intent. The account shows «healthy» CTR while CRM conversion collapses. This article covers how to spot patterns in GA4, Yandex Metrica, and logs — not budget economics (covered separately).

For «how much bots cost and strategic defense», see fraud traffic and ad budget waste. Here — performance marketer detective work.

Signal 1: anomalous CTR without conversion lift

CTR jumps 30–80% in days, impressions stable, but leads or add-to-cart do not. Especially suspicious when the spike aligns with competitor activity or brand keyword changes.

  • Compare CTR by hour of day — bots often wave in off-peak hours for your audience.
  • Split by placement / network / keyword — one sub-source may drive all anomalous CTR.
  • Match ClikBy Audience on the same smart link: confirmed vs bot share explains «pretty» Ads CTR.

Signal 2: zero or micro time on site

Click recorded, but Metrica/GA shows 0–2 second sessions, one hit, no scroll. Rare for real users on a meaningful landing; bots close after faking the transition.

  • Plot session duration for paid vs organic — a two-peak curve (0 sec + normal tail) often means bot/human mix.
  • Check engagement rate (GA4) or depth in Metrica by utm_campaign.
  • On the ClikBy smart link, review conversion score and bot_server / bot_filter — independent layer before the platform «sees» conversion.

Signal 3: 90%+ bounce on paid landing

High bounce alone does not prove fraud (bad ad/page match too). But 95–100% bounce across several campaigns with decent creative — dig deeper.

  • Rule out technical causes: slow TTFB, broken redirect, cookie consent blocking.
  • Segment bounce by geo and device — farms cluster in cheap regions or headless Chrome.
  • Compare Ads click ID bounce with ClikBy alias bounce — gaps suggest clicks that do not reach analytics equally.

Signal 4: competitor click fraud

A competitor or bad affiliate burns your daily budget on brand terms so you drop from auction. Signs: brand keyword spikes, single IP/subnet, zero goals.

  • Use IP exclusion lists where allowed; document patterns for Ads support.
  • Split brand and non-brand with separate smart links — easier to prove anomalies on the brand alias.
  • Pulse fraud-IP export — extra lever, not a substitute for platform investigation.

Signal 5: bot farms and «too perfect» traffic

Device farms with residential IP mimic CTR better than random datacenter bots. Catch them via mismatches: perfect CTR + zero CR + uniform user-agent / screen sizes.

  • New vs returning users in analytics — farms often show 100% new with no returning tail.
  • Mobile traffic share without mobile events (add to cart, scroll depth).
  • In ClikBy Audience, filter by alias and status — confirmed/bot overview in Audience fraud overview.

How to verify: smart links + Audience

Place a ClikBy smart link between the ad and landing (per campaign or ad group alias). 14-day baseline: bot share, conversion score, geo/device. Then align with GA/Metrica — matching anomalies strengthen pausing a source or a refund request.

ClikBy does not auto-refund Ads spend or replace platform investigation. It provides an independent click log with confirmed / bot statuses — what is missing when support says «everything looks clean in the account».

Different from the budget waste article

Here — analytics diagnostics (CTR, bounce, time on site). In fraud-traffic-ad-budget-waste — economics and budget defense strategy. Use both: find the pattern first, then quantify damage and cut sources.

One-week marketer checklist

  • CTR vs CR delta per paid channel.
  • Session duration < 3 sec — share by utm_source.
  • Paid landing bounce vs organic benchmark.
  • ClikBy Audience: confirmed/bot by alias, aligned with Metrica anomalies.
  • Brand campaigns — separate alias and off-hour spike monitoring.
